Multi Skilled Machining
Breakdown of the four year apprenticeship programme:
Year One
Six months off the job training in the training centre, completing units of Level 2 NVQ in Performing Engineering Operations (PEO), Functional Skills, Technical Certificate, Personal Learning & Thinking skills, and an introduction to Employment Responsibilities and Rights (ERR)
Six months training at Seta Ltd will cover:
Mandatory Units:
1. Working safely in an engineering environment.
2. Working efficiently and effectively in engineering.
3. Using and communicating technical information.
Machining Units:
1. Manual Turning.
o Additionally including surface grinding to cover safe work-holding and use of machine.
2. Manual Milling.
3. Preparing and proving CNC machine tool programmes.
o Programming and operation of CNC Milling – Heidenhain.
o Programming and operation of CNC Turning – Fanuc.
The Functional Skills will cover:
1. English.
2. Mathematics.
3. Information &Communication Technology.
Technical Certificate
The Technical Certificate is an EAL Level 3 Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology, achieved through study, at Seta, one day per week for one year. The Seta Technical Certificate includes additional units of maths and science to prepare for potential progression to HNC studies.
Employment Rights and Responsibilities
The ERR programme will begin in the Centre and be completed when the apprentice returns to the employer.
1. Statutory Rights and Responsibilities (Contracts and conditions of employment)
2. Procedures and Documentation (Health and safety, sickness etc.)
3. Representative Bodies (Trade unions, Training support bodies)
Commencement of on-the-job training:
Upon completion of the off the job programme the apprentice returns to the employer to commence the on the job training programme to meet the requirements of a Level 3 NVQ Extended Diploma. Pathways and units of this programme will be selected by the employer with guidance from Seta.
Year Two
The apprentice continues to gain knowledge and experience of the practical aspect of the job in preparation for assessment of the competences outlined in the NVQ Level 3 programme.
Years Three and Four
Further on the job experience and skills development leading to the successful completion of the NVQ Level 3 programme.
At the discretion of, and at their own cost - Employers have the option of enrolling apprentices on a one year HNC Course in years 3 and /or 4.
SETA staff will visit the apprentices on a regular basis to conduct assessments and provide support and guidance throughout the whole apprenticeship programme.

Fab & Weld Units
1. Bench fitting skills.
2. Sheet Metal Components and Assemblies.
3. MiG Welding.
The Functional Skills will cover:
1. English.
2. Mathematics.
3. Information & Communication Technology.
Personal Learning & Thinking skills require learners to be:
1. Independent enquirers
2. Creative thinkers
3. Reflective learners
4. Team workers
5. Self managers
6. Effective participators
Technical Certificate:
The Technical Certificate is a City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Engineering, which will be achieved through study at Seta one day per week for one year.

Work Experience at Employer:
During the eight month workshop – based training, the apprentices will be released to employers, between programme units, for short breaks of work based training and company familiarisation.
Upon completion of the off the job programme the apprentice returns to the employer to commence the on the job training programme to meet the requirements of the Level 3 NVQ Extended Diploma in Fabrication & Welding. Pathways and units of this programme will be selected by the employer with guidance from Seta.
Year Two
