Fabrication & Welding Apprenticeship

Breakdown of the 42 month apprenticeship programme:

Year One

Eight months off the job training in the training centre, completing units of an EAL Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations (PEO), Functional Skills, Technical Certificate, Personal Learning & Thinking skills, and an introduction to Employment Responsibilities and Rights (ERR).

Off the job training at Seta will cover:

Mandatory Units:

  • Working safely in an engineering environment
  • Working efficiently and effectively in engineering
  • Using and communicating technical information

Fabrication & Welding units:

  • Bench fitting skills
  • Sheet metal components and assemblies
  • MiG welding

​Functional skills:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Information & Communication Technology

​Personal Learning & Thinking skills require learners to be:

  • Independant enquirers
  • Creative thinkers
  • Reflective thinkers
  • Team workers
  • Self managers
  • Effective participators

​Technical Certificate:

The Technical Certificate is a City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Engineering, which will be
achieved through study at Seta one day per week during the off the job training period.

Employment Rights and Responsibilities:

The ERR programme will begin in the Centre and be completed when the apprentice returns to the employer.

  • Statutory Rights and Responsibilities (contracts and conditions of employment)
  • Procedures and Documentation (health and safety, sickness etc.)
  • Representative Bodies (trade unions, training support bodies)

​Work Experience at Employer:

During the eight months off the job training period, the apprentices will be released to
employers, between programme units, for short breaks of work based training and
company familiarisation.

Upon completion of the off the job programme the apprentice returns to the employer to
commence the on the job training programme to meet the requirements of an EAL Level 3
NVQ Extended Diploma in Fabrication & Welding. Pathways and units of this programme
will be selected by the employer with guidance from Seta.

Year Two

The apprentice continues to gain knowledge and experience of the practical aspect of the job in preparation for assessment of the competences outlined in the NVQ Level 3 programme.

Years Three and Four

Further on the job experience and skills development leading to the successful completion of the NVQ Level 3 programme.

Seta staff will visit the apprentices on a regular basis throughout the apprenticeship programme to conduct assessments and provide support and guidance.
